Quarter Final
West Germany 0 Mexico 0
West Germany win 4-1 on penalties

So off we went for a weekend footy and the BBC opened the proceedings with the live game France v Brazil kicking off at 7pm. Now recognised as one of the great World Cup games, a frantic fast paced game resulted in France's victory on penalties. The great Brazil team of the 1980s had now missed out. Careca had now moved level at the top of the Golden Boot charts, although Gary Lineker and Emilio Butragueno were both still in the tournament.

ITV at 11pm, meantime, got the other side of the coin - a long tedious game resulting in a German win on penalties (not for the last time!)

In the cricket, England were being well beaten - and a nation hoped its' footballers would do better.
