Saturday 14 June 1986
The end of the first round and a rest day - on a Saturday! Some bad scheduling from someone there.
South Korea, Iraq, Hungary, Canada, Northern Ireland, Algeria, Scotland and Portugal were all out and the final 16 teams went through to the knock out phase.
The final 16 lined up as:
Argentina v Uruguay
England v Paraguay
Denmark v Spain
Soviet Union v Belgium
Brazil v Poland
Italy v France
Morocco v West Germany
Mexico v Bulgaria
The prospect of an Argentina v England game four years after the Falklands war gave much thought but in the top half, only Denmark were the other team who were considered contenders.
Many of the favourites were in the bottom half - including the hosts, Mexico, the favourites, Brazil, and the usual suspects of West Germany and Italy.

World Cup 1986 - Day Fourteen
Friday 13 June 1986
Despite two losses, a win for Scotland would still make them amongst the four best third placed teams, ahead of Northern Ireland (one point) and Bulgaria (two points with a '-2' goal difference). ITV viewers were there at 7pm for the kick off and Scotland's chances were improved when Uruguay had a sending off in the first minute!
However, Uruguay just needed a draw which they got with a determined performance in a dull game, and Scotland joined the Northern Irish on an early flight back to Blighty.
Meanwhile, another impressive performance from Denmark as the Germans were defeated and the Danes topped the group.

Could Northern Ireland defeat Brazil by two goals to guarantee a last 16 place? Even a win by one goal might have been enough. But no, BBC viewers saw the live game at 7pm and Brazil's best performance so far. Northern Ireland's third place with one point was not good enough.
Spain, meanwhile, coasted home.

World Cup 1986 - Day Twelve
Wednesday 11 June 1986
Again ITV only had the second half of a game - Coronation Street obviously a lot more important then than now - and Mexico got the win they needed to top the group. A good game was taking place elsewhere as Paraguay and Belgium shared four goals - Belgium finished third in the table but were higher than the two third places so far - so were in the last 16.
And then, with bated breath, a nation watched England kick off at 11pm on the BBC - and watched as Gary Lineker destroyed Poland. A complete change of performance and England were in the last 16. Poland had done enough to join them and the group was surprisingly topped by Morocco, who sent home Portugal.
