World Cup 1986 - Day Eleven

Tuesday 10 June 1986

This time it was Emmerdale Farm which ITV could not move and so again with both matches kicking off at 7pm, British viewers only got a live second half. The consolation was that it was a cracker with South Korea giving Italy a fright. Altobelli's double equalling the lead for the Golden Boot.

Italy and Argentina confidently booking their places in the second round. Bulgaria having to wait to see if they got one of the four best third places - but they were ahead of Canada from last night.

World Cup 1986 - Day Ten

Monday 9 June 1986

The final games of each group were to be played at the same time (as they still are to this day), which was a legacy of the 1982 West Germany v Austria match where both sides engineered a result to see them through.

But, with both games kicking off at 7pm, only the second half of one game - France v Hungary - was on offer. ITV in those days were very reluctant to move Coronation Street.

France and the Soviet Union secured their last 16 place with convincing wins. Hungary probably had not done enough. At least Canada did not have too far to fly home.
