World Cup 1986 - Day Twenty Nine

Saturday 28 June 1986

Third Place Play-off
France 4 Belgium 2 (after extra time)
Ferreri 27, Papin 43, Genghini 104, Amoroa (pen) 111; Ceulemans 11, Claesen 73

Third place play offs are curious things - as far as I know, the world cup is the only tournament to have one (the FA Cup had a few in the early 1970s).

However, perhaps because there is no tension, they usually end up being good games and this one followed that pattern. A ding-dong battle going into extra-time.

Oddly neither channel decided to show the game live - ITV had evening highlights.
