World Cup 1986 - Day Twenty One

Friday 20 June 1986

The second rest day, as we all looked forward to a feast of weekend footy.

As for the cricket - England v India - 2nd Test 2nd Day - India were all out for 272 but then saw off England for 102 (Binny 5-40). However an England fightback and at stumps India were 70-5 - 240 ahead with five wickets to fall.

World Cup 1986 - Day Twenty

Thursday 19 June 1986

The first of two rest days - as everyone now looked forward to the quarter finals - with five European teams in the last eight.

France v Brazil
West Germany v Mexico
Argentina v England
Belgium v Spain

Meanwhile, the cricket continued. England v India - 2nd Test 1st Day - at Headingley, and India ended the day with 235-8 (Vengsarkar 61).

For a bonus, here are the highlights of Spain v Denmark from last night.

World Cup 1986 - Day Nineteen

Wednesday 18 June 1986

Second Round

Second Round
Spain 5 Denmark 1
Butragueno 43, 56, 80, 88 (pen) Goikoetxea 68; J. Olsen 33

What an evening of footy!

England expected .. and, for once, England delivered. Both BBC and ITV had the game live as England put in a comfortable victory. Two typical Lineker goals put him top of the Golden Boot charts. The cry was now 'Bring On The Argies'.

An extra treat awaited those who stayed up for the 11pm game on the BBC. Denmark, impressive so far, were themselves demolished by an even more impressive Spain. Butragueno finding the net four times to equal the record for most goals by a player in one game (Salenko of Russia got five against Cameroons in 1994).

Again it was ITV's turn for the early kick off at 7pm and France booked a quarter final with Brazil by seeing off Italy.

On BBC at 11pm and Morocco, the surprise winners of England's group, battled well but went down to a late West German goal. The wait for an African world cup quarter finalist goes on. Amazingly this was only the fourth goal in four games from West Germany.

ITV had the early 7pm kick off as Brazil demolished Poland - Careca's fourth of the tournament tying him for the Golden Boot - while the BBC had the late game at 11pm with Argentina winning through a tough battle.

By now, it was twigged that we were heading for an Argentina-England showdown just four years after the Falklands war.

Into the knockout stages (the first time since 1938 that the knockout stages began at 16 teams).

The BBC were live at 7pm as the hosts made it into the quarter finals, and then a treat for anyone who stayed up late for the ITV game kicking off at 11pm with Belgium, having just sneaked into the round, putting four past the Soviet Union. Belanov's hat trick placed him sharing the golden boot but no-one thought he would stay there.

World Cup 1986 - Day Fifteen

Saturday 14 June 1986

The end of the first round and a rest day - on a Saturday! Some bad scheduling from someone there.

South Korea, Iraq, Hungary, Canada, Northern Ireland, Algeria, Scotland and Portugal were all out and the final 16 teams went through to the knock out phase.

The final 16 lined up as:

Argentina v Uruguay
England v Paraguay
Denmark v Spain
Soviet Union v Belgium
Brazil v Poland
Italy v France
Morocco v West Germany
Mexico v Bulgaria

The prospect of an Argentina v England game four years after the Falklands war gave much thought but in the top half, only Denmark were the other team who were considered contenders.
Many of the favourites were in the bottom half - including the hosts, Mexico, the favourites, Brazil, and the usual suspects of West Germany and Italy.

World Cup 1986 - Day Fourteen

Friday 13 June 1986

Despite two losses, a win for Scotland would still make them amongst the four best third placed teams, ahead of Northern Ireland (one point) and Bulgaria (two points with a '-2' goal difference). ITV viewers were there at 7pm for the kick off and Scotland's chances were improved when Uruguay had a sending off in the first minute!

However, Uruguay just needed a draw which they got with a determined performance in a dull game, and Scotland joined the Northern Irish on an early flight back to Blighty.

Meanwhile, another impressive performance from Denmark as the Germans were defeated and the Danes topped the group.

World Cup 1986 - Day Thirteen

Thursday 12 June 1986

Could Northern Ireland defeat Brazil by two goals to guarantee a last 16 place? Even a win by one goal might have been enough. But no, BBC viewers saw the live game at 7pm and Brazil's best performance so far. Northern Ireland's third place with one point was not good enough.

Spain, meanwhile, coasted home.

World Cup 1986 - Day Twelve

Wednesday 11 June 1986

Again ITV only had the second half of a game - Coronation Street obviously a lot more important then than now - and Mexico got the win they needed to top the group. A good game was taking place elsewhere as Paraguay and Belgium shared four goals - Belgium finished third in the table but were higher than the two third places so far - so were in the last 16.

And then, with bated breath, a nation watched England kick off at 11pm on the BBC - and watched as Gary Lineker destroyed Poland. A complete change of performance and England were in the last 16. Poland had done enough to join them and the group was surprisingly topped by Morocco, who sent home Portugal.

World Cup 1986 - Day Eleven

Tuesday 10 June 1986

This time it was Emmerdale Farm which ITV could not move and so again with both matches kicking off at 7pm, British viewers only got a live second half. The consolation was that it was a cracker with South Korea giving Italy a fright. Altobelli's double equalling the lead for the Golden Boot.

Italy and Argentina confidently booking their places in the second round. Bulgaria having to wait to see if they got one of the four best third places - but they were ahead of Canada from last night.

World Cup 1986 - Day Ten

Monday 9 June 1986

The final games of each group were to be played at the same time (as they still are to this day), which was a legacy of the 1982 West Germany v Austria match where both sides engineered a result to see them through.

But, with both games kicking off at 7pm, only the second half of one game - France v Hungary - was on offer. ITV in those days were very reluctant to move Coronation Street.

France and the Soviet Union secured their last 16 place with convincing wins. Hungary probably had not done enough. At least Canada did not have too far to fly home.

World Cup 1986 - Day Nine

Sunday 8 June 1986

A Sunday feast as the two TV games matched the occasion. On BBC at 7pm, the live game saw Scotland cross swords with West Germany and go down in a tight game. Qualification chances were now very slim. Highlights were shown of Belgium defeating Iraq.

ITV had the late night game kicking off at 11pm where Denmark absolutely demolished Uruguay and seal their place in the next round. The tournament's first hat trick saw Elkjaer leap into the lead for the Golden Boot.

World Cup 1986 - Day Eight

Saturday 7 June 1986

ITV had the Northern Ireland game live at 7pm with the Mexico-Paraguay game highlighted. Spain gained revenge for the home defeat in 1982 and Northern Ireland now had to get something out of Brazil. Meanwhile the host nation limbered on to a disappointing draw.

Then for the late night option, at 11pm, the BBC had Poland seeing off England's conquerors to Portugal to open the group up.

World Cup 1986 - Day Seven

Friday 6 June 1986

Strangely BBC continued showing only parts of games - at 7.40pm, the second half of Brazil beating Algeria 1-0 was followed by highlights of Hungary defeating Canada.

Not a great performance by one of the favourites but Brazil had now got their place in round two. Hungary had improved their chances but had a tough game against France to come.

A late night for England fans, as ITV had the game for an 11pm kick off. A dreary game and another poor performance saw Bryan Robson go off inured and Ray Wilkins get sent off for throwing the ball at the referee. Two games, one point, no goals - yet another England disappointment was on the cards.

World Cup 1986 - Day Six

Thursday 5 June 1986

Into the second set of games we go. ITV had the big name game, as Italy and Argentina battled for a 1-1 draw live, while showing highlights of France and the Soviet Union also drawing 1-1. Argentina, France and the Soviet Union now looking comfortable for the second round.

Oddly the BBC's coverage only came on at midnight for the last half hour of Bulgaria v South Korea. Bulgaria did not take their chance with only a draw, with Argentina to come!

World Cup 1986 - Day Five

Wednesday 4 June 1986

Today was the last batch of first round games.

BBC showed the second half of West Germany drawing with Uruguay at 7.40pm - for some reason, preferring Wogan to the first half, and then the late kick off for 11pm for Scotland live on ITV losing to Denmark.

Overall, quite a low key start to the world cup with nine of the twelve games having two or less goals. Very disappointing for the three British sides, with one goal, one draw and two losses between them.

Group E:
West Germany 1 Uruguay 1
Allofs 84; Alzamendi 4

Group B:
Paraguay 1 Iraq 0
Romero 35

Tuesday 3 June 1986

Three more games and we at last got to see two of the Home Nations in action.

At 7pm Northern Ireland were live on ITV but were unable to beat Algeria, with a 1-1 draw. Highlights were shown of the other game where Mexico beat Belgium 2-1.

And then it was a late night on the BBC with an 11pm kick off as England faced Portugal - a quite dull game, with England poor, and losing!!

Group B:
Mexico 2 Belgium 1
Quirarte 23, Sanchez 39; Vandenburgh 45

Group D:
Northern Ireland 1 Algeria 1
Whiteside 6; Zidane 59

World Cup 1986 - Day Three

Monday 2 June 1986

Three games today as we finally got into the action, although limited for TV viewers.

Two games at 7pm but BBC only showed the second half of one and the highlights of the other.

Argentina, led by the enigmatic Diego Maradona (of whom we might hear more!) were many people's favourites for the cup, and made a confident start putting away South Korea. BBC viewers would have just started to watch as the third goal went in. Meanwhile the Soviet Union absolutely demolished Hungary.

For the late 11pm kick off England viewers might have watched the ITV live coverage of two teams in the group, Morocco and Poland - but they would not have seen much in a goalless draw.

Group A:
Argentina 3 South Korea 1
Valdano 6, 46, Ruggeri 18 - Park Chang-Sun 73

Group C:
Soviet Union 6 Hungary 0
Yakovenko 2, Aleinikov 4, Belanov 24 (pen), Yaremchuk 66, 75, Rodionov 80

World Cup 1986 - Introduction

To get us through the summer, a day by day account of what many consider to be the best of all the World Cups - Mexico 1986 - including some YouTube highlights of 'Game Of The Day'.

The previous World Cup in Mexico 1970 was the first that was shown in colour and is best remembered for the magnificent games featuring Brazil as well as (in England minds) the 3-2 quarter final win by West Germany. Again the pictures were sharp and the quality of the sound wonderfully scratchy - and we were all introduced to the 'Mexican wave'.

Football in England was at a low ebb - it was only a year after the ban on European competitions had begun - but Liverpool had dazzled on their way to a League and Cup double, and, with England, Scotland and Northern Ireland all qualifying, hopes were high for an entertaining tournament.

The format was for 24 teams to be placed into six groups. The top two, and the four best placed third placed teams, would advance to the last 16 - which would then be a straight knock out.

Canada, Denmark and Iraq were making their first appearance in a world cup finals

The draw took place on Sunday 15 December 1985 and produced:

Group A: Italy, Argentina, South Korea, Bulgaria
Group B: Mexico, Paraguay, Iraq, Belgium
Group C: France, Soviet Union, Canada, Hungary
Group D: Brazil, Spain, Algeria, Northern Ireland
Group E: West Germany, Uruguay, Denmark, Scotland
Group F: Poland, England, Morocco, Portugal
