Wednesday 18 June 1986
Second Round
England 3 Paraguay 0
Lineker 31, 73, Beardsley 56
Second Round
Spain 5 Denmark 1
Butragueno 43, 56, 80, 88 (pen) Goikoetxea 68; J. Olsen 33
What an evening of footy!
England expected .. and, for once, England delivered. Both BBC and ITV had the game live as England put in a comfortable victory. Two typical Lineker goals put him top of the Golden Boot charts. The cry was now 'Bring On The Argies'.
An extra treat awaited those who stayed up for the 11pm game on the BBC. Denmark, impressive so far, were themselves demolished by an even more impressive Spain. Butragueno finding the net four times to equal the record for most goals by a player in one game (Salenko of Russia got five against Cameroons in 1994).
Golden Boot
5 - Lineker (Eng), Butragueno (Spa)
4 - Careca (Bra), Elkjaer (Den), Altobelli (Ita), Belanov (Sov)

Again it was ITV's turn for the early kick off at 7pm and France booked a quarter final with Brazil by seeing off Italy.
On BBC at 11pm and Morocco, the surprise winners of England's group, battled well but went down to a late West German goal. The wait for an African world cup quarter finalist goes on. Amazingly this was only the fourth goal in four games from West Germany.
