The 1970 World Cup on television

The 1970 world cup was the first to be shown worldwide on colour television, but, as so many matches were taking place at the same time, it would have only been possible to watch 11 of the 32 games live (unless you had two televisions!)

Here is a list of the games that the TV channels (and there were only three in those days) were showing live.

Sunday 31 May - 7pm
Mexico 0 Soviet Union 0 (BBC/ITV)

World Cup 1986 - Day Thirty

Sunday 29 June 1986

World Cup Final
Argentina 3 West Germany 2
Brown 23, Valdano 55, Burruchaga 83; Rummenigge 74, Voller 80

Both the BBC and the ITV had the delight of showing the world cup final live - a situation which must have upset someone.

Gary Lineker was a studio guest for the BBC and was able to cheer as Maradona's blank ensured the Golden Boot would be ending up on Gary's mantelpiece - although I expect being presented with the world cup was enough of a consolation for Diego.

Golden Boot Final List

GAME OF THE DAY - ARGENTINA V WEST GERMANY

World Cup 1986 - Day Twenty Nine

Saturday 28 June 1986

Third Place Play-off
France 4 Belgium 2 (after extra time)
Ferreri 27, Papin 43, Genghini 104, Amoroa (pen) 111; Ceulemans 11, Claesen 73

Third place play offs are curious things - as far as I know, the world cup is the only tournament to have one (the FA Cup had a few in the early 1970s).

However, perhaps because there is no tension, they usually end up being good games and this one followed that pattern. A ding-dong battle going into extra-time.

Oddly neither channel decided to show the game live - ITV had evening highlights.

Nothing to report today - sorry!

World Cup 1986 - Day Twenty Seven

Thursday 26 June 1986

A rest day - everyone looked forward to the final - Argentina vs West Germany.

And some may have looked forward to the third place play-off - France vs Belgium

World Cup 1986 - Day Twenty Six

Wednesday 25 June 1986

Semi Final
West Germany 2 France 0
Brehme 9, Voller 89

Semi Final
Argentina 2 Belgium 0
Maradona 51, 63

Semi finals day - and ITV kicked off at 7pm for West Germany v France. A considerably less eventful semi than the one four years previously and the Germans were through to their umpteenth major final.

Over to the BBC for the 11pm game and as Argentina saw off Belgium, England fans could only think of what might have been. New villain Maradona was now perilously close to taking the Golden Boot off our Gary which would have added insult to insult.

Golden Boot

World Cup 1986 - Day Twenty Five

Tuesday 24 June 1986

So now four teams were left - and the semi-finals were the next day.

West Germany v France (a repeat of the controversial 1982 semi-final)

Argentina v Belgium

Meanwhile here are some highlights of the quarter final - Belgium v Spain

World Cup 1986 - Day Twenty Four

Monday 23 June 1986

A disappointed nation went back to work on Monday morning.

The mood was not lifted by England's cricket team crashing to an expected heavy defeat.

England v India - 2nd Test 4th Day (at Headingley)

India 272 (Vengsarkar 61) & 237 (Vengsarkar 102 not out)
England 102 (Binny 5-40) & 128

India win by 279 runs

World Cup 1986 - Day Twenty Three

Sunday 22 June 1986

Quarter Final
Argentina 2 England 1
Maradona 51, 55; Lineker 81

Quarter Final
Belgium 1 Spain 1
Ceulemans 35, Senor 85
Belgium win 5-4 on penalties

England expects! A nation crowded in front of their respective televisions at 7pm as ITV displayed one of the most famous (or infamous) England games of all time. Maradona showed us his worst and his best and sent England home. Gary Lineker got his sixth to go top of the Golden Boot charts.

Many people might have gone to bed disappointed and not stayed up for the 11pm kick off on the BBC - Belgium becoming the third semi-finalist to go through on penalties, and Butragueno's golden boot dream was gone.

Golden Boot

6- Lineker (Eng)

5 - Careca (Bra), Butragueno (Spa)

GAME OF THE DAY - ARGENTINA V ENGLAND

World Cup 1986 - Day Twenty Two

Saturday 21 June 1986

Quarter Final
France 1 Brazil 1
Platini 40, Careca 17
France win 4-3 on penalties

Quarter Final
West Germany 0 Mexico 0
West Germany win 4-1 on penalties

So off we went for a weekend footy and the BBC opened the proceedings with the live game France v Brazil kicking off at 7pm. Now recognised as one of the great World Cup games, a frantic fast paced game resulted in France's victory on penalties. The great Brazil team of the 1980s had now missed out. Careca had now moved level at the top of the Golden Boot charts, although Gary Lineker and Emilio Butragueno were both still in the tournament.

ITV at 11pm, meantime, got the other side of the coin - a long tedious game resulting in a German win on penalties (not for the last time!)

In the cricket, England were being well beaten - and a nation hoped its' footballers would do better.

England v India - 2nd Test 3rd Day (at Headingley)

India 272 (Vengsarkar 61) & 237 (Vengsarkar 102 not out)
England 102 (Binny 5-40) & 90-6

World Cup 1986 - Day Twenty One

Friday 20 June 1986

The second rest day, as we all looked forward to a feast of weekend footy.

As for the cricket - England v India - 2nd Test 2nd Day - India were all out for 272 but then saw off England for 102 (Binny 5-40). However an England fightback and at stumps India were 70-5 - 240 ahead with five wickets to fall.

World Cup 1986 - Day Twenty

Thursday 19 June 1986

The first of two rest days - as everyone now looked forward to the quarter finals - with five European teams in the last eight.

France v Brazil
West Germany v Mexico
Argentina v England
Belgium v Spain

Meanwhile, the cricket continued. England v India - 2nd Test 1st Day - at Headingley, and India ended the day with 235-8 (Vengsarkar 61).

For a bonus, here are the highlights of Spain v Denmark from last night.

World Cup 1986 - Day Nineteen

Butragueno 43, 56, 80, 88 (pen) Goikoetxea 68; J. Olsen 33

What an evening of footy!

England expected .. and, for once, England delivered. Both BBC and ITV had the game live as England put in a comfortable victory. Two typical Lineker goals put him top of the Golden Boot charts. The cry was now 'Bring On The Argies'.

An extra treat awaited those who stayed up for the 11pm game on the BBC. Denmark, impressive so far, were themselves demolished by an even more impressive Spain. Butragueno finding the net four times to equal the record for most goals by a player in one game (Salenko of Russia got five against Cameroons in 1994).

Golden Boot
5 - Lineker (Eng), Butragueno (Spa)

4 - Careca (Bra), Elkjaer (Den), Altobelli (Ita), Belanov (Sov)

Tuesday 17 June 1986

Second Round
France 2 Italy 0
Platini 15, Stopyra 37

Second Round
West Germany 1 Morocco 0
Matthaus 87

Again it was ITV's turn for the early kick off at 7pm and France booked a quarter final with Brazil by seeing off Italy.

On BBC at 11pm and Morocco, the surprise winners of England's group, battled well but went down to a late West German goal. The wait for an African world cup quarter finalist goes on. Amazingly this was only the fourth goal in four games from West Germany.

Golden Boot

3 - Valdano (Arg), Lineker (Eng)

2 - Claesen (Bel), Scifo (Bel), Josimar (Bra), Socrates (Bra), J. Olsen (Den), Stopyra (Fra), Quirarte (Mex), Khairi (Mor), Cabanas (Par), Yaremchuk (Sov), Caldere (Spa), Allofs (WGer)

Pasculli 42

ITV had the early 7pm kick off as Brazil demolished Poland - Careca's fourth of the tournament tying him for the Golden Boot - while the BBC had the late game at 11pm with Argentina winning through a tough battle.

By now, it was twigged that we were heading for an Argentina-England showdown just four years after the Falklands war.

Golden Boot
4 - Careca (Bra), Elkjaer (Den), Altobelli (Ita), Belanov (Sov)

3 - Valdano (Arg), Lineker (Eng)

Into the knockout stages (the first time since 1938 that the knockout stages began at 16 teams).

The BBC were live at 7pm as the hosts made it into the quarter finals, and then a treat for anyone who stayed up late for the ITV game kicking off at 11pm with Belgium, having just sneaked into the round, putting four past the Soviet Union. Belanov's hat trick placed him sharing the golden boot but no-one thought he would stay there.

Golden Boot
4 - Elkjaer (Den), Altobelli (Ita), Belanov (Sov)

3 - Valdano (Arg), Careca (Bra), Lineker (Eng)

2 - Claesen (Bel), Scifo (Bel), J. Olsen (Den), Quirarte (Mex), Khairi (Mor), Cabanas (Par), Yaremchuk (Sov), Caldere (Spa), Allofs (WGer)

World Cup 1986 - Day Fifteen

Saturday 14 June 1986

The end of the first round and a rest day - on a Saturday! Some bad scheduling from someone there.

South Korea, Iraq, Hungary, Canada, Northern Ireland, Algeria, Scotland and Portugal were all out and the final 16 teams went through to the knock out phase.

The final 16 lined up as:

Argentina v Uruguay
England v Paraguay
Denmark v Spain
Soviet Union v Belgium
Brazil v Poland
Italy v France
Morocco v West Germany
Mexico v Bulgaria

The prospect of an Argentina v England game four years after the Falklands war gave much thought but in the top half, only Denmark were the other team who were considered contenders.
Many of the favourites were in the bottom half - including the hosts, Mexico, the favourites, Brazil, and the usual suspects of West Germany and Italy.

World Cup 1986 - Day Fourteen

Friday 13 June 1986

Despite two losses, a win for Scotland would still make them amongst the four best third placed teams, ahead of Northern Ireland (one point) and Bulgaria (two points with a '-2' goal difference). ITV viewers were there at 7pm for the kick off and Scotland's chances were improved when Uruguay had a sending off in the first minute!

However, Uruguay just needed a draw which they got with a determined performance in a dull game, and Scotland joined the Northern Irish on an early flight back to Blighty.

Meanwhile, another impressive performance from Denmark as the Germans were defeated and the Danes topped the group.

Group E:
Scotland 0 Uruguay 0

GAME OF THE DAY - DENMARK V WEST GERMANY

World Cup 1986 - Day Thirteen

Thursday 12 June 1986

Could Northern Ireland defeat Brazil by two goals to guarantee a last 16 place? Even a win by one goal might have been enough. But no, BBC viewers saw the live game at 7pm and Brazil's best performance so far. Northern Ireland's third place with one point was not good enough.

Spain, meanwhile, coasted home.

Group D:
Brazil 3 Northern Ireland 0
Careca 15, 87, Josimar 42

World Cup 1986 - Day Twelve

Wednesday 11 June 1986

Again ITV only had the second half of a game - Coronation Street obviously a lot more important then than now - and Mexico got the win they needed to top the group. A good game was taking place elsewhere as Paraguay and Belgium shared four goals - Belgium finished third in the table but were higher than the two third places so far - so were in the last 16.

And then, with bated breath, a nation watched England kick off at 11pm on the BBC - and watched as Gary Lineker destroyed Poland. A complete change of performance and England were in the last 16. Poland had done enough to join them and the group was surprisingly topped by Morocco, who sent home Portugal.
